Apple execs say Mac mini power button on bottom due to size restraints
Mac Mini, News, Tablets & ComputersApple execs say the bottom of the Mac mini is the best location for the power button since people hardly use it, and there is so much packed into the small cube that it made the most sense to have it on the bottom.
Specifically, a Chinese content creator named Bilibili asked Apple execs John Ternus and Greg Joswiak, who responded that after redesigning the computer to be so small, the bottom was the ideal spot to place the button. They followed that up by saying that most Mac users rarely turn their computers off. They don’t seem to elaborate on either of these points, but it is hard to tell since the video is dubbed in Chinese, so it’s not clear if there was more that was cut off or if these were the short responses.
In my setup, I have no issues tilting the Mac mini a bit to make sure I can slip my fingers underneath it, and the dimple on the button makes it easy to find without having to see it visually. Not something I can say for the Mac Studio which has its button on the rear. I’m also one of the people who never turn my Mac off, so I can easily wake it up from sleep using my mouse or keyboard.
Overall, I think this whole power button predicament has been overblown, and if you really hate it you could always turn the computer upside down and use it that way or get a 3D printed part to allow you to hit the underside button from above.
